Owasso Police Link June Child Abuse Probe to July Murder-Suicide

Summary

Owasso authorities say the same man investigated for child sexual abuse in June was subject to a protective order before he killed his estranged wife in a July 23 incident that ended in a murder-suicide.

Owasso police disclosed that Jeremiah Shawn Duffey, 48, who was investigated for alleged child molestation in June, was also the suspect in a July 23 domestic-violence incident that resulted in a murder-suicide. The June case involved a report that Duffey, a traveling youth basketball coach, had inappropriately touched a juvenile player at an elementary-school gym that was being used by his team, which was not affiliated with the public-school system. Because the alleged conduct occurred in Indian Country and Duffey is a member of the Osage Nation, the investigation was transferred to the U.S. Attorney’s Office under the Federal Major Crimes Act, ending local jurisdiction.

Police said Sara Jane Duffey, 43, had obtained a protective order against her estranged husband after the June investigation. On July 23, officers responded to a 911 call at a residence near 12318 N. 130th E. Ave. shortly after 11:15 p.m. The call included a scream and a presumed gunshot, followed by a second call from a juvenile reporting that his stepfather had shot his mother. Responding officers found both Sara Duffey and Jeremiah Duffey dead from apparent gunshot wounds to the head, and investigators are treating the case as a murder-suicide. Police noted no prior reports of violations of the protective order.

The investigation also noted that Sara Duffey, who was active on social media, had posted a video on June 11 accusing her estranged husband of sexual misconduct.
