Massive Wildfire in Southern France Claims One Life, Injures Several

Summary

A rapidly spreading wildfire in France's Aude region has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, consuming over 13,000 hectares and prompting extensive evacuations.

A massive wildfire erupted on Tuesday in the village of Ribaute, located in France's Aude region near the Spanish border. The blaze has consumed over 13,000 hectares (32,000 acres), surpassing the size of Paris, and continues to spread amid hot, dry, and windy conditions.

Local authorities confirmed that one person died in their home, and at least 13 others have been injured, including 11 firefighters.

Approximately 2,000 firefighters, supported by water bomber aircraft, are actively battling the fire. Entire villages, such as Jonquières, have been evacuated. Mayor Jacques Piraux described the scene as "a lunar landscape, everything is burned. More than half or three-quarters of the village has burned down. It's hellish."

Residents and tourists in nearby areas have been advised to remain indoors unless instructed to evacuate. Two campsites were evacuated as a precaution.

Prime Minister François Bayrou visited the affected region, expressing national solidarity and acknowledging the impact on the local economy, which relies heavily on wineries and tourism.

The Aude region has been experiencing drought conditions, with water use restrictions in place. The environment ministry noted that the lack of rainfall in recent months has played a major role in the fire's rapid spread, as the vegetation is very dry.

Southern Europe has faced multiple large fires this summer. Scientists warn that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
