Oregon health officials probe two Cyclospora cases amid lettuce recall

Summary

The Oregon Health Authority is investigating two local Cyclospora infections linked to a multistate outbreak, while noting that the recalled pre-shredded iceberg lettuce was not distributed in the state and the public risk remains low.

The Oregon Health Authority is investigating two residents who have been diagnosed with Cyclospora infections that are tied to a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak and a nationwide recall of pre-shredded iceberg lettuce. The voluntary recall, announced on July 17, did not involve distribution of the affected lettuce in Oregon, and officials say the overall risk to the public is low because Cyclospora is not transmitted directly from person to person.

State health data show 23 cyclosporiasis cases reported in Oregon so far in 2026, a figure comparable to recent years (26 in 2025, 30 in 2024, 10 in 2023, eight in 2022 and 14 in 2021). Historically, Oregon cases have often been linked to recent international travel rather than a national outbreak.

Authorities expect additional cases may appear among individuals who have recently traveled to affected areas or as further products are identified in the broader outbreak. They advise residents to reduce foodborne infection risk by practicing safe food handling, including frequent hand and surface washing, thorough rinsing of fresh produce under running water, and cooking foods to appropriate temperatures.
