Anthropic launches Claude Opus 5 model with enhanced coding and security features
Anthropic introduced its new Claude Opus 5 AI model, noting comparable performance to its Fable 5 system, improved handling of complex coding tasks, and stronger cybersecurity safeguards.
Anthropic announced the release of its latest AI model, Claude Opus 5, on Thursday. The company said the new model "comes close to the capabilities of Claude Fable 5 in many domains" and performs better on complex coding tasks. Anthropic also highlighted that Opus 5 includes stronger cybersecurity safeguards than its predecessor, Opus 4.8, and is designed to be less prone to misuse.
The firm is targeting enterprise customers, positioning Opus 5 as suitable for knowledge work and biology, while describing Fable 5 as better suited for more ambitious projects and long-term AI agent development. Pricing remains unchanged from the prior model at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, which Anthropic noted is half the cost of Fable 5 and slightly lower than OpenAI's GPT-5.6.
Customers may select a "Fast mode" that offers higher speed for double the standard price, and can opt in to automatic fallbacks to a lower-tier model when safety protocols block a request.
"We continue to work with our government partners to conduct their own independent testing of our models. This includes Opus 5," spokesperson Danielle Ghiglieri said.
