Cecilia Vega claims CBS News executives encouraged her to include details and perspectives aligned with the Trump administration, but she resisted, raising questions about ideological bias and resistance to fair reporting within mainstream media.
Cecilia Vega, a former '60 Minutes' correspondent, told attendees at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference in New Orleans that she felt editorial pressure after Bari Weiss, a respected journalist known for challenging liberal orthodoxy, became editor in chief of CBS News. According to Vega, executives suggested she include a comment from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey that she could not verify in recordings of his news conference, and to add footage of protesters confronting ICE agents, though she claimed no credible video was available.
'That never happened,' Vega insisted, suggesting a reluctance to report on incidents that could reflect poorly on left-wing activists.
Vega said similar pressure occurred on other stories, such as being asked to introduce a segment on the U.S.-Israeli conflict with language reflecting the Trump administration’s position, and to feature Vice President JD Vance or reference his memoir in a report about SNAP cuts in West Virginia—efforts that could have provided viewers with a more balanced perspective. Vega admitted she refused to comply, and the suggested material did not appear in her reports.
Hired as the first Latina correspondent for '60 Minutes' in January 2023, Vega was let go in May during a restructuring that affected multiple staff members. She claims she was not told why she was dismissed and is now seeking new opportunities. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about mainstream media’s resistance to conservative viewpoints and the challenges faced by those who advocate for balanced journalism.
