Cecilia Vega alleges CBS News executives pressured her to distort stories to fit Trump administration narratives and add unverified details, raising concerns about media complicity in right-wing agendas and the silencing of diverse voices.
Cecilia Vega, a former correspondent for '60 Minutes,' revealed at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists conference in New Orleans that she endured editorial pressure after Bari Weiss, a figure known for platforming right-wing voices, became editor in chief of CBS News. Vega recounted how executives demanded she insert a comment from Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey that she could not find in any recording of his news conference, and to fabricate a narrative by adding video of protesters confronting ICE agents, despite the absence of credible footage.
'That never happened,' Vega stated, exposing the network’s willingness to manufacture anti-immigrant hysteria.
Vega further explained that the pressure was not isolated: she was told to open a report on the U.S.-Israeli conflict with language echoing Trump administration talking points, and to highlight Vice President JD Vance or his memoir in a story on SNAP cuts in West Virginia—moves that would have amplified reactionary perspectives and marginalized the real impact on vulnerable communities. Vega resisted these unethical demands, ensuring the manipulated content did not make it into her final reports.
Despite her trailblazing role as the first Latina correspondent hired by '60 Minutes' in January 2023, Vega was dismissed in May during a so-called restructuring that disproportionately impacted staff from underrepresented backgrounds. She has yet to receive any explanation for her termination, a move that raises serious questions about CBS News’s commitment to diversity and journalistic integrity. Vega is now seeking new opportunities, undeterred in her pursuit of truth.
