Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark faces possible suspension after seventh technical foul

Summary

Caitlin Clark received her seventh technical foul in a 123-88 win over the Connecticut Sun, putting her one violation away from a one-game suspension under WNBA rules.

Indiana Fever point guard Caitlin Clark was assessed her seventh technical foul of the season during the team's 123-88 victory over the Connecticut Sun on July 22. The infraction followed a verbal exchange with Sun guard Saniya Rivers with 28.8 seconds left in the third quarter, after Clark felt she had been fouled. Clark told Rivers to "look at the scoreboard," prompting officials to issue technicals to both players.

Clark finished with 27 points and 11 assists, helping the Fever set a new franchise scoring record. Under league policy, an eighth technical foul triggers an automatic one-game suspension, and each subsequent pair of technicals adds another suspension. Clark is currently tied with Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese for the most technical fouls in the WNBA this season.

Fever head coach Stephanie White said Clark must be selective about expressing emotions, noting the coaching staff can only provide limited guidance. "She’s got to pick and choose and it’s every two (technicals) after that," White said.

Clark acknowledged the risk but said she does not intend to change her playing style. "I’m never going to back down," she said, adding that she will try to balance intensity with emotional control to remain available for her teammates.

The Fever have 18 regular-season games remaining after the All-Star break. Clark is averaging a technical foul roughly every 3.3 games and has not confirmed whether a suspension is inevitable.
