Sen. Tommy Tuberville called for the detention of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, citing the mayor's remarks labeling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as an architect of genocide.
Alabama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani should be arrested and sent to the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay. Tuberville described Mamdani as a “thug” and warned that the mayor would eventually “do something more stupid” that would justify his imprisonment.
Mamdani, who announced that the city lacks legal authority to enforce an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for Netanyahu, said the federal government could act on the warrant and that the Israeli leader is not welcome in New York. He added that any war criminal should be subject to arrest.
The senator’s remarks followed the mayor’s video statement and prompted criticism from several Republican lawmakers. Rep. Randy Fine called Mamdani an “apologist for terrorists” and suggested denaturalization and deportation. Other officials, including Rep. Nancy Mace and Sen. John Fetterman, also voiced strong opposition to the mayor’s comments.
President Donald Trump responded on social media, stating that Netanyahu would not be arrested while in the United States and emphasizing the United States’ stance against Iran.
The United States is not a party to the ICC, and the current administration has indicated it will not act on the warrant against Netanyahu.
