Panthers linebacker Nic Scourton sustains knee injury during first camp practice

Summary

Panthers outside linebacker Nic Scourton injured his right knee in the team's opening training camp session and will undergo imaging to determine the severity.

Panthers outside linebacker Nic Scourton suffered a right-knee injury during the club’s first training-camp practice on Thursday, head coach Dave Canales said at a post-practice press conference.

"They’re going to look at that and get some imaging, and we’ll let you know once we have more [information]," Canales said. Canales declined to speculate on the injury’s seriousness, noting the player appeared upset as he was taken off the field. "I’m hoping for the best. So, we’ll just get the full imaging before we make any announcements that way," he added. The coach expressed confidence in the depth of the Panthers’ edge-rush group, citing players such as Jaelen Phillips, Pat Jones and Princely Umanmielen as potential replacements if Scourton’s recovery proves lengthy. "We’ve got a whole group of guys that we’re counting on. So, if it comes to that, we have guys that we trust and are going to ask to do different things. But let’s hold off on that until we know what’s going on," Canales said.
