Madison police officer fatally shoots suspect who brandished knife during arrest

Summary

A Madison police officer shot and killed a man who injured the officer with a knife while resisting arrest, prompting protests and an investigation by state authorities.

A Madison police officer shot and killed a man who injured the officer with a knife while resisting arrest, the police chief said Wednesday. The victim, identified only as a man in his 30s, died at a hospital after the officer fired his weapon. Police said they were responding to reports of someone trying to enter parked vehicles when the suspect fled on a bike, was confronted, and produced a large fixed-blade knife that wounded an officer. A taser was deployed but was ineffective, and the injured officer, described as a veteran, discharged his firearm.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson expressed sympathy for the victim’s family, saying, "I want to take a moment to honestly and sincerely offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family for this loss." He noted that additional video of the incident exists and will be reviewed as part of the investigation, urging the community to remain calm while the facts are gathered.

A crowd gathered near the scene, with some chanting and local Black-community advocates stating the deceased was Black. Protester Francesca Hong, a candidate for governor, was among those present. Governor Tony Evers said transparency and accountability are required in the ongoing investigation, which will be conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation. All four officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, standard protocol for such incidents.
