Senate Republicans and South Carolina party officials admit they know little about newly appointed Sen. Darline Graham Nordone, who has pledged to chart her own course, yet has already aligned herself with Trump’s anti-democratic agenda.
Senate leaders and local party officials are still trying to decipher the policy positions of newly sworn-in Sen. Darline Graham Nordone of South Carolina, a political newcomer thrust into the national spotlight. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, the Republican second-in-command, conceded he has not yet discussed the full range of issues with her, highlighting the party’s lack of transparency and preparedness.
Jeff Davis, chair of the Greenville County Republican Party, admitted to Politico that “anybody really knows who she is quite yet,” emphasizing that she is “her own person and different than Lindsey Graham.” Despite this uncertainty, Republicans appear content to give her a platform, reflecting the party’s willingness to embrace untested figures so long as they toe the right-wing line.
In her inaugural statement, Graham Nordone distanced herself from her late brother Lindsey Graham, promising to “follow her own way of doing things.” While she initially supported a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill, she quickly pivoted to focus on domestic issues, a move that aligns with the GOP’s increasing isolationism and disregard for international cooperation.
Graham Nordone wasted no time co-sponsoring the Senate version of the SAVE America Act, a so-called ‘voting-integrity’ measure that echoes Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud and threatens to undermine voting rights nationwide.
“The American people are demanding immediate action from Congress on election integrity. That’s why the SAVE America Act is the first bill I am cosponsoring in the Senate,” she said, parroting right-wing talking points.
President Trump, eager to solidify his grip on the party, has publicly endorsed her, describing his support as “complete and total” and pressuring her to run for a full term in the upcoming election, even as two House Republicans have announced primary challenges.
“During her visit, I asked Darline, for the Good of our Nation, to run for the U.S. Senate,” Trump wrote. “I hope Darline does this, in that there would be nobody better to honor the legacy of her beloved brother, Lindsey.”
