Summary

Physician and former state legislator Amish Shah won the Democratic primary and will face Republican Jay Feely in the November race for Arizona's 1st Congressional District.

Democrat Amish Shah defeated Republican-turned-Democrat Marlene Galán-Woods in the primary for Arizona's 1st Congressional District, positioning him to challenge GOP nominee Jay Feely in the November general election. The district, which includes Scottsdale and surrounding areas, is viewed as one of the nation’s most competitive House races. Current incumbent Rep. David Schweikert, an eight-term Republican, left the seat to run for governor, where he was defeated by Rep. Andy Biggs.

Shah, a physician and former state legislator, previously ran for the seat in 2024 and lost to Schweikert by about four percentage points. Galán-Woods, a former broadcast journalist and widow of the late former Arizona attorney general Grant Woods, had received backing from national Democratic groups in the primary. She had earlier signed a pledge criticizing the party’s left wing after recent primary wins by democratic socialists.

In the Republican primary, former state lawmaker Joseph Chaplik, a member of the Arizona Freedom Caucus who resigned his legislative seat to focus on the congressional race, was defeated by Jay Feely.
