LeBron James' Free-Agency Decision Delayed, Teams Still Pursuing

Summary

LeBron James has not yet decided on his destination for the 2026-27 NBA season, and several teams remain in contention while the league awaits his choice to finalize the schedule.

LeBron James did not announce a new team on Tuesday, and sources say he is still weighing his options for the 2026-27 season. ESPN reporter Dave McMenamin told SportsCenter that James has not reached a decision and that there is no detailed rollout plan for his eventual announcement.

"I've checked in with two people, one person from two different teams that are still in active pursuit and those two people both brought up the fact that, 'Hey, we have some family vacations planned here,'" McMenamin said. He added that while vacation plans do not necessarily end a team's interest, they add logistical challenges. McMenamin previously identified the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat as among the clubs still courting James. The NBA's all-time leading scorer informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to play elsewhere, but he remains a free agent after the free-agency period opened on June 30. NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league cannot complete next season's schedule until James signs, noting that his team assignment influences the opening week and Christmas games. "We have to finish up the schedule and where LeBron plays affects the schedule... So I need him to make a decision," Silver said. The next possible window for a decision, according to McMenamin, could be early next week.
