Trump-endorsed Andy Biggs Secures Arizona GOP Gubernatorial Nomination
Congressman Andy Biggs won the Republican primary for Arizona governor, setting up a contest against incumbent Democrat Katie Hobbs in a state that has become a key battleground since the 2020 election.
Arizona voters selected their party nominees for governor and other top offices on Tuesday, with Congressman Andy Biggs emerging as the Republican candidate for governor. Biggs, who received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, defeated fellow congressman David Schweikert and two businessmen in the primary.
Biggs, a former chair of the House Freedom Caucus, is expected to face Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who ran unopposed for her party’s nomination after flipping the governorship in 2022. Political analysts describe the upcoming race as one of the most closely watched contests in the nation, given Arizona’s status as a swing state.
The primary also determined nominees for other statewide positions. State Senate President Warren Petersen will challenge Democrat Kris Mayes for attorney general, while Republican state representative Alex Kolodin will run against Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes for the office that oversees elections.
In congressional races, Democrats hope to capitalize on national trends to win two competitive House districts, while Republicans aim to retain their slim majorities in both chambers of the state legislature.
"Arizona has transformed from a Republican stronghold into a competitive swing state," a political observer noted, highlighting demographic shifts and changing suburban voting patterns.
The results underscore the continuing realignment of Arizona’s electorate and set the stage for a high-stakes general election later this year.
