Summary

Donald Trump-backed Republicans secured nominations for governor and several congressional seats in Arizona, while centrist Democrats held their primary in the 4th District against a left-wing challenger.

Donald Trump’s endorsed candidates swept key Republican primaries in Arizona on Tuesday, winning the gubernatorial nomination and multiple congressional contests. Rep. Andy Biggs, who received Trump’s endorsement, defeated Rep. David Schweikert and other GOP contenders by more than 50 points to become the party’s nominee for governor. Former NFL kicker Jay Feely, also backed by Trump, won the Republican primary in the state’s 1st Congressional District, while former Pinal County sheriff Mark Lamb secured the GOP nomination in the 5th District and Juan Ciscomani ran unopposed in the 6th District.

Biggs will face Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who was renominated without opposition, in the November general election. In the 1st District, Feely is expected to meet former state Rep. Amish Shah, who leads the Democratic primary results. Lamb’s victory positions him to replace Biggs in Congress, and his campaign has emphasized “God, family, freedom” and a hard-line border stance.

On the Democratic side, Rep. Greg Stanton retained the nomination in the 4th District, defeating progressive challenger Kai Newkirk and averting a potential left-wing upset in the battleground district.
