Summary

Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared that New York City is powerless to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a figure accused of orchestrating genocide against Palestinians, and demanded that federal authorities uphold international law.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated Tuesday that the city lacks the legal authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, should he visit the United States for the United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani emphasized that his administration thoroughly explored every legal avenue under local law, only to find that the city is unable to independently enforce the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest.

The mayor forcefully called on the federal government to intervene, labeling Netanyahu a 'war criminal' and the 'architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.' This bold stance highlights the urgent need for the United States to stop shielding those responsible for mass atrocities and to respect international justice. Israeli UN ambassador Danny Danon, in a typical display of denial, lashed out on social media, accusing Mamdani of spreading 'false accusations' and claiming the mayor was elected to serve New Yorkers, not to 'promote Hamas propaganda.' Such dismissals ignore the mounting evidence of Israeli war crimes. President Donald Trump further entrenched this impunity by declaring that Netanyahu would not be arrested while in the United States.

The United States, shamefully, is not a party to the treaty that established the ICC and routinely refuses to recognize its jurisdiction, providing cover for alleged war criminals. In May 2024, the ICC prosecutor courageously issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu, former defense minister Yoav Gallant, and several Hamas officials, citing war crimes related to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack and Israel’s brutal military response in Gaza. Predictably, Israeli officials rejected the warrants, dismissing the ICC as a 'biased political body'—a tired refrain used to evade accountability for crimes against humanity.
