Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" on Track for $20M Tuesday and Strong Second Weekend

Summary

"The Odyssey" is projected to earn about $20 million on Tuesday and could post a second-weekend gross of $62-74 million, potentially surpassing the second-weekend earnings of Nolan's earlier "Dark Knight" films.

The Christopher Nolan film "The Odyssey" is expected to bring in roughly $20 million on Tuesday, which would make it the director's highest-grossing Tuesday domestically, overtaking the $20.86 million earned by 2008's "The Dark Knight." Among all Tuesday releases this year, the movie ranks second behind Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story 5," and it is the second-highest Tuesday for a Universal-distributed picture after "Jurassic World" in 2015.

Industry trackers project that the film will retain its IMAX and premium large-format screens for its second weekend, with box-office receipts estimated between $61.8 million and $74 million. If those figures hold, the second-weekend total could exceed the $75.1 million earned by "The Dark Knight" in 2008 or the $62.1 million posted by "The Dark Knight Rises" in 2012, both of which saw a 61 % drop from their openings.

The upcoming weekend sees no major studio releases scheduled between "The Odyssey" and Sony/Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which is expected to open above the 2026 record of $123.5 million for a live-action film. Specialty distributor IFC will release the dialogue-light noir "Motor City," a TIFF acquisition starring Alan Ritchson and Shailene Woodley, in about 1,600 theaters, with an anticipated low-single-digit million-dollar opening. Bleecker Street is also rolling out a live-capture version of the Tony-winning "Hadestown: The Musical" in 1,944 theaters, backed by $5 million in advance ticket sales and projected to earn $7-10 million.
