MLB trade deadline approaches as analysts predict player moves
With the August 3 deadline less than two weeks away, experts weigh which teams may buy or sell key pitchers and position players, highlighting possible destinations for several notable athletes.
The Major League Baseball trade deadline is set for Aug. 3, prompting clubs to assess roster needs and playoff prospects. Analysts from CBS Sports discussed likely scenarios for a handful of players.
"The Dodgers are motivated to three-peat, have rotation injuries and a deep farm system, so adding a pitcher like Tarik Skubal could help them win a third straight World Series," said analyst Mike Axisa. Dayn Perry argued that the Detroit Tigers, who have improved since June, are unlikely to trade their ace and may retain him for a postseason run. Freddy Peralta was linked to the Chicago Cubs, with Axisa noting the Cubs' need for pitching and a possible connection to manager Craig Counsell. Perry suggested the Milwaukee Brewers could also be a destination because of recent rotation injuries. Taylor Ward was identified as a potential acquisition for the Philadelphia Phillies, who require a right-handed power outfielder, according to both Axisa and Perry. Luis Arraez’s future was debated; Axisa predicted he will stay with the San Francisco Giants, while Perry and Snyder saw the Boston Red Sox as a likely buyer to bolster their second base and leadoff roles. Aroldis Chapman was mentioned as unlikely to be moved by the Red Sox, who are contending for a postseason spot, according to both Axisa and Perry.
