Fourth Fatality Reported in Manhattan Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak
New York City health officials confirmed a fourth death linked to a Legionnaires’ disease cluster on the Upper East Side, bringing the total to 76 cases, with seven patients still hospitalized.
New York City health officials said a fourth person died from Legionnaires’ disease in Manhattan, adding to a cluster of cases on the Upper East Side. The first death was reported on Friday, followed by two more over the weekend. The city’s health department has recorded 76 confirmed cases and seven people remain in hospital.
Attorney Ron Katter, representing the widow of an 88-year-old veteran who died after a two-week illness, said his client’s husband became ill on July 2 after his wife left him briefly to run an errand. Katter indicated that his client plans to sue the owner of a cooling tower once the health department identifies the source of the Legionella bacteria.
Mayor [Name] Mamdani said on Monday that officials believe the source of exposure has been eliminated. The health department will continue inspecting all cooling towers that tested positive for Legionella.
