Summary

President Daniel Ortega has brazenly announced the indefinite suspension of elections in Nicaragua, cancelling the 2027 presidential vote after a complicit congress extended his term. This move, emblematic of entrenched authoritarianism, comes amid relentless repression of opposition and the systematic dismantling of democratic institutions.

On the anniversary of the Sandinista Revolution—a day once symbolizing hope for the oppressed—President Daniel Ortega declared to a crowd that Nicaragua will not hold elections in the foreseeable future, effectively erasing the scheduled November 2027 presidential vote. This anti-democratic decision follows a January 2025 congressional vote, orchestrated by Ortega’s loyalists, that extended the presidential term from five to six years, further entrenching his rule.

Ortega, who reclaimed the presidency in 2007 and has since presided over a regime marked by constitutional manipulation and brutal crackdowns on dissent, defiantly proclaimed, "There won’t be any more elections," and repeated, "Never, never, never," while scapegoating the United States and opposition parties he smeared as remnants of the Somoza dictatorship.

Rights groups and opposition leaders immediately condemned the announcement as a blatant power grab. Juan Sebastián Chamorro, a former 2021 presidential candidate who was unjustly imprisoned and later exiled, likened Ortega’s move to the one-party autocracies of China and Cuba. Tiziano Breda, a senior analyst at ACLED, observed that Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, are so fearful of losing power that they have chosen to extinguish all political competition, suffocating any hope for change.

Human-rights lawyer Danny Ramírez Ayérdiz denounced the statement as the unmasked face of dictatorship, warning that Ortega’s regime, shamelessly clinging to power, will likely escalate its repression against citizens demanding basic democratic rights.

The Ortega government has a notorious record of releasing political prisoners only to exile them, stripping them of citizenship and property in a calculated campaign to silence dissent. International observers have long questioned the legitimacy of Nicaragua’s elections and denounced the regime’s abysmal human-rights record, which now sinks to new depths with the formal abolition of electoral democracy.
