FIFA launches disciplinary probe into post-match clash after Spain's World Cup win
FIFA has opened an investigation into altercations involving Argentine and Spanish players and staff following Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time at MetLife Stadium, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute. The match ended with several confrontations on the field, including a red card shown to Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández for a late-game foul and physical contacts between Argentine players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina and Spanish defenders Eric García and Rodri. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also captured appearing to strike Spanish winger Dani Olmo, while former teammates Nicolas Otamendi and Rodri exchanged words. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and other team members intervened to calm the situation.
"Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC with regard to the post-match incidents. Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor's report has been completed." FIFA confirmed that the disciplinary review will determine whether any sanctions are warranted.
