U.S. soldier killed in Iraq during controlled detonation of Iranian drone debris
A U.S. servicemember died in northern Iraq while a team carried out a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone, bringing the total U.S. fatalities since the conflict began to 17.
The U.S. Central Command said a service member was killed on July 18 in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance recovered from an Iranian drone that had been shot down. A second U.S. personnel sustained mild injuries in the same operation. The identities of the victims were not released.
The death raises the number of U.S. service members killed since the United States and Israel launched military actions against Iran on Feb. 28 to 17. Two other U.S. personnel were killed in Iranian strikes in Jordan on Friday, and a third remains missing, with unidentified remains recovered and under examination.
The incident occurred as U.S. forces conducted their eighth consecutive night of strikes against Iranian targets, while Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. assets in the Gulf region. Iranian media reported U.S. attacks near Sirik and Shadegan in southern Iran, and an explosion was later reported in Abadan.
Iranian state television said drones were used against U.S. military facilities at Kuwait’s Al-Adiri camp and the Ali Al Salem airbase. Kuwait’s government confirmed a desalination plant was hit for a second day, causing a fire. Bahrain’s air defenses intercepted an Iranian attack, and Jordan reported shooting down three Iranian missiles, summoning Iran’s chargé d’affaires in protest.
The broader conflict has caused significant casualties and disruptions to energy supplies, raising concerns about regional stability and global economic impacts.
