Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff Targets Trump in 2026 Reelection Campaign

Résumé

Incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff is centering his 2026 Senate race on criticism of President Donald Trump, leveraging a viral speech and a significant fundraising edge over Republican challenger Mike Collins.

Incumbent Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff has made President Donald Trump the focal point of his 2026 reelection campaign, describing the former leader as a "national disgrace" and accusing him of corruption. The 39-year-old Democrat, who won his seat in a 2021 runoff, is facing Republican Rep. Mike Collins, who secured a primary victory after receiving an endorsement from Trump.

Ossoff’s recent stump speech, which has been widely shared on social media, attacks Trump’s alleged financial dealings, tax policies and claims that the former president is “the world’s most famous sore loser.” He also linked rising costs for gas, groceries and healthcare to the Trump administration’s policies.

"He’s a failed president and a national disgrace," Ossoff said during the address.

Democratic strategist Lis Smith said Ossoff’s approach could boost his profile within the party, noting that tying Trump’s personal financial gain to broader economic outcomes may resonate with voters. Smith cautioned that sustained performance across various campaign formats will be necessary for Ossoff to transition from a viral moment to a lasting national figure.

Ossoff has raised $20 million in the second quarter of 2026 and has $42 million remaining for the campaign, a stark contrast to Collins, who has raised about $2.1 million. The fundraising disparity gives Ossoff a substantial advantage as he seeks to retain the only Democratic Senate seat in a state Trump carried in the 2024 presidential election.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore, also campaigning for reelection, praised Ossoff and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms as “fighters” who can disrupt the status quo and address cost-of-living pressures.

The race is viewed as critical for Democrats, who need to gain additional seats to reclaim a Senate majority. Ossoff’s emphasis on anti-Trump messaging reflects the broader partisan dynamics shaping upcoming midterm contests.
