U.S. Conducts Eighth Night of Strikes on Iran After Attack on Jordan

Summary

The United States carried out its eighth consecutive night of airstrikes against Iranian coastal and IRGC targets following an Iranian missile attack that killed two U.S. service members and left a third missing in Jordan.

The U.S. Central Command said it completed an eighth straight night of strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance systems, air defenses, maritime assets and missile and drone storage sites. The operation, ordered by the commander in chief, aimed to further degrade Iran’s military capabilities after an Iranian missile attack on a Jordanian military base killed two American soldiers and left another service member missing.

Jordan’s armed forces reported intercepting three missiles launched from Iran toward the southern city of Aqaba, with one missile landing inside Jordan but causing no casualties or damage. The Israeli Defense Forces also claimed to have shot down missiles heading toward the Israeli city of Eilat, where no injuries were reported.

Iran’s Supreme Leader warned of “unforgettable lessons” if the United States continues its attacks, and Tehran announced it was suspending its commitments to a recent interim nuclear agreement.

The U.S. embassy in Jordan advised American citizens to avoid travel to Aqaba’s international airport and seaport, citing a “specific and credible threat.” Jordanian officials later said no evacuation order had been issued and that the facilities were operating normally.

In related developments, a power and desalination plant in Kuwait was struck for a second time in two days, prompting fire-fighting efforts and claims by Kuwaiti authorities that Iran was responsible for the attacks.

"We strongly advise all Americans to refrain from traveling to either the airport or the seaport and to follow Jordanian security directives," the U.S. embassy said.

"We are on high alert and more than 50,000 U.S. troops are operating across the Middle East," CENTCOM added.

The strikes come amid heightened tensions over control of the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global oil and gas shipments.
