Wildfire Smoke and Storms Expected to Clear Ahead of World Cup Final in New Jersey

Summary

Smoke from Canadian wildfires has reduced visibility in the New York-New Jersey area, but meteorologists say thunderstorms will improve air quality before the Spain-Argentina World Cup final on Sunday.

Smoke from more than 950 Canadian wildfires has drifted into the northeastern United States, creating a haze that lowered air-quality readings in New York and New Jersey on Saturday. The U.S. National Weather Service warned that the smoke would persist through the afternoon, but forecasts show conditions improving to moderate levels for the day of the final in East Rutherford.

A thunderstorm moved through the region on Saturday, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and lightning that disrupted activities at the stadium. State police ordered spectators to seek shelter, and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill warned of damaging winds, tornadoes, flash flooding and large hail. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents to stay indoors and avoid travel.

Spain’s final training session was cancelled due to the storm, with the team moving to an indoor warm-up as required by U.S. safety protocols. Argentina completed its scheduled outdoor session without reporting concerns about the weather or air quality.

FIFA said it is in close contact with local authorities and continues to monitor the situation. White House World Cup task-force director Andrew Giuliani told reporters that officials are watching the smoke and storm impacts closely.

Meteorologists expect the storm front to push the thickest smoke out of the northeast before kickoff. Tyler Roys of AccuWeather said the remaining haze should be faint, while Jeff Berardelli of WFLA-TV said the atmosphere will be largely cleared, leaving only a thin smoke that spectators might smell. Temperatures are forecast at about 27 °C (80 °F) with light breezes and low humidity, conditions described as comfortable for the match.
