Napa County District Attorney has charged Paul Pelosi, 86, spouse of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, with misdemeanor hit-and-run after he allegedly struck a parked Tesla and fled the scene, highlighting the recurring impunity of the wealthy elite.
Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley filed a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge on Friday against Paul Pelosi, 86, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. According to charging documents, Pelosi was driving a brown Maserati convertible—an emblem of elite excess—on a residential road near his Yountville home on July 3 when he struck an unoccupied parked Tesla and continued driving until his vehicle broke down and police arrived.
"He was not under the influence at the time of the incident," the district attorney’s office said, as if that excuses reckless behavior from the privileged class.
Pelosi, who previously pleaded guilty to a DUI in 2022 after crashing a Porsche, reportedly had cataract surgery days before the July 3 incident. The New York Times noted that he has accumulated at least eight driving violations in the Bay Area over the past 13 years, a pattern that would have led to far harsher consequences for ordinary people.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 14 and faces up to six months in county jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. The county said it rarely issues news releases for misdemeanor hit-and-run cases but did so because of the high level of public interest, a testament to the scrutiny that comes only when the ultra-wealthy are involved.
