Second Victim Identified in San Francisco Bay Boat Capsizing
A 58-year-old Sacramento County woman was identified as the second fatality after a Stockton-based boat capsized near Alcatraz Island, authorities said.
San Francisco police identified Tondra Miller, 58, of Sacramento County, as the second person who died when a Volare cabin cruiser capsized in the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Miller also used the surname Madruga and that she lived in Folsom.
Police were conducting sonar scans when a passing vessel reported a body near Treasure Island. Divers recovered the body, and officials declared Miller dead at the scene.
The capsizing involved a 50-foot, three-story-high boat that had been carrying about 20 people for a memorial service. Sixteen passengers were rescued, two bodies have been recovered and three individuals remain missing. A dog aboard also perished.
The U.S. Coast Guard, San Francisco Fire Department and local police continue to search for the missing persons and to locate the wreck, which rests roughly 130 feet below the water’s surface.
Earlier, 79-year-old Clifford Joseph Boisa of Sutter County was identified as the first confirmed death. His wife and sister are still unaccounted for.
Family members and friends expressed grief, and authorities thanked first responders and civilian volunteers for their assistance.
