Detroit Red Wings end Steve Yzerman's seven-year tenure as general manager
Steve Yzerman departed the Detroit Red Wings after seven seasons without a playoff appearance, amid criticism of his rebuilding strategy, draft results and roster moves.
Steve Yzerman’s seven-year stint as general manager of the Detroit Red Wings concluded this week as the club begins a search for his successor. Hired in 2019 to lead a rebuild, Yzerman oversaw a period in which the team failed to qualify for the playoffs, despite modest improvements in point totals.
Yzerman emphasized patience from the start, often avoiding a specific timeline for the rebuild. In a 2022 press conference he said the organization was at “the end of Year 3 and the beginning of Year 4,” and warned that impatience could lead to “doing something stupid.” Critics argue that the lack of a clear plan contributed to inconsistent roster moves.
The 2022 off-season marked the first major free-agency activity under Yzerman, with signings such as Andrew Copp, Ben Chiarot, David Perron and Dominik Kubalik. The team’s point total rose from 74 to 80 the following season, but the Red Wings missed out on top draft positions, selecting ninth overall and passing on future stars Matvei Michkov and Ryan Leonard.
Subsequent seasons saw a series of trades and signings, including the acquisition of Alex DeBrincat, Jeff Petry and veteran Patrick Kane, but the 2024 trade deadline was quiet and the off-season departures of David Perron and Shayne Gostisbehere for marginal returns raised questions about the overall direction.
Draft performance under Yzerman was mixed. Early successes included first-round picks Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond, both of whom became key contributors. Later first-round selections such as Nate Danielson and others have yet to make a significant impact, and the organization struggled to develop players selected beyond the first round.
Other factors cited include the limited assets Yzerman inherited, a lack of lottery luck in the draft, and perceived mental-toughness issues that led to late-season collapses in recent years. The recent trade request from captain Dylan Larkin highlighted potential challenges in player-management relationships.
Despite the shortcomings, analysts note that the Red Wings retain promising young talent, trade-able assets and a relatively clean salary cap, positioning the franchise for a quicker retool under new leadership.
