Flooding in Central Texas kills two, forces mass evacuations

Summary

Heavy rains caused the Guadalupe, Frio and Pedernales rivers to swell, resulting in two deaths and dozens of rescues across several Hill Country towns.

Emergency crews ordered residents to evacuate as the Guadalupe River rose sharply in Comfort, Texas, on Thursday morning. Retired librarian Jodye Koopman, 53, left her recreational vehicle and sought shelter at a nearby high school with her family and pets.

The storm has inundated large parts of Central Texas, killing at least two people and prompting evacuations by ground and helicopter in communities along the Guadalupe, Frio and Pedernales rivers.

Governor Greg Abbott told a news conference that Uvalde, Johnson City and Comfort could see peak flows among the five highest ever recorded for the region, and that the Nueces River near Uvalde was flowing at twice the volume of Niagara Falls. He warned that the situation could set a new record by Friday.
