Eight Olympians call on WNBA to strengthen player safety after incidents involving Caitlin Clark
Eight Olympic athletes from the United States, Jamaica and Germany urged the WNBA to enforce its rules and protect player safety following a series of on-court incidents involving rookie star Caitlin Clark.
Eight Olympians from three countries have publicly urged the Women’s National Basketball Association to take stronger action on player safety after a series of incidents involving rookie guard Caitlin Clark. The athletes, speaking to Fox News Digital, said the league must enforce its rules consistently and hold offenders accountable.
"The WNBA needs the courage to act decisively for athlete safety. Caitlin Clark is a generational superstar, but she deserves the same protection as every player," said three-time Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Nancy Hogshead.
"She has faced repeated hard fouls and relentless criticism. The league had passionate fans before she arrived, but her impact expanded the audience in a way that’s hard to ignore," said Jamaican skeleton pioneer Anthony Watson.
"For those of us pioneers who had no college or professional sports opportunities and have worked tirelessly to elevate all women in sports, the abuse behavior directed at Caitlin Clark is disrespectful and shortsighted," added two-time Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Donna de Varona.
"Safety is not a political issue. All players deserve fair play, safety, and sports are at their best when the focus is on the game," said five-time Olympian skeleton athlete Katie Uhlaender.
"When the public focus of the league becomes peripheral drama having nothing to do with the fundamental sport, the league will always suffer," warned German modern-pentathlon champion Steffen Gebhardt.
"The WNBA never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. If the WNBA wants to become a truly relevant sports league that offers women a high-paid professional opportunity, they will need to clear out the petty drama and focus on building a world-class sporting operation," said U.S. modern-pentathlon athlete Eli Bremer.
"I hope Caitlin is finally going to be recognized as a passionate athlete and a generational player. Celebrate her, her teammates, and the WNBA," said cyclist Inga Thompson.
"The WNBA has not been aggressive enough in protecting Caitlin Clark. Every player in the league deserves the same safeguards when they step on the court," said former gymnast Carrie Englert Zimmerman.
The comments came after a recent game in which Clark was involved in a confrontation that included a physical altercation with an opponent and a heated exchange with officials. The Olympians emphasized that consistent rule enforcement and a focus on competition, rather than controversy, are essential for the league’s credibility and growth.
