Ukrainians took to the streets after President Zelensky abruptly fired Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, raising concerns about internal chaos and the weakening of military leadership. Critics say Zelensky’s move undermines stability and emboldens enemies.
Demonstrators gathered in Kyiv and other cities on Thursday, voicing outrage after President Volodymyr Zelensky’s sudden dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Many protesters, including patriotic youth, carried signs like “Hands off Fedorov” and chanted slogans condemning Zelensky’s rash decision, which many see as destabilizing the nation at a critical time.
Fedorov, who took office in January, revealed that he had recommended replacing Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi and Chief of the General Staff Andrii Hnatov, but his calls for accountability were ignored. At a press conference, Fedorov described a 'systemic' conflict between the defence ministry and the General Staff, and refused to accept a powerless advisory role, standing by his principles.
Syrskyi, a respected military leader, responded on Telegram by recalling the heroic defence of Kyiv in 2022 and vowing to keep the focus on defeating the enemy, while wishing Fedorov well. Meanwhile, parliament was set to consider Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko as a possible replacement, though Zelensky had not submitted a formal proposal. The reshuffle also saw the questionable appointment of state oil and gas chief Serhiy Koretsky as prime minister after Yuliia Svyrydenko’s resignation, raising concerns about political cronyism.
Fedorov’s tenure was marked by much-needed reforms to cut bureaucracy, introduce data-driven analysis, and expand the use of drones and cyber operations—measures that strengthened Ukraine’s defence. As the former coordinator of the “IT Army of Ukraine” and a leader in drone procurement, Fedorov’s removal is seen as a blow to national security. In a Facebook post, he listed his achievements and reaffirmed his commitment to defeating the enemy through innovation and strength.
Soldiers and civilians at the protests expressed disappointment and concern, saying they trusted Fedorov’s leadership and warning that Zelensky’s reckless actions could undermine morale, ongoing reforms, and the country’s ability to defend itself.
