England's World Cup semifinal loss attributed to fear and tactical changes, says Thomas Tuchel
England were eliminated in the World Cup semi-final after a 1-1 draw with Argentina, with manager Thomas Tuchel blaming a defensive mindset and limited possession for the defeat.
England were knocked out of the World Cup after a 1-1 draw with Argentina in the semi-final, with the match ending in a penalty shoot-out. Thomas Tuchel said the team played with excessive caution, noting that players were “more afraid… they were playing not to lose.” Harry Kane reflected that England tried to protect a 1-0 lead, which he said “is not enough” at that level.
Tuchel’s side took the lead through Anthony Gordon in the 55th minute, but defensive substitutions in the 70s, including the introduction of centre-back Ezri Konsa, led to a period of limited attacking output. Argentina equalised through Enzo Fernández, and later Lionel Messi set up Lautaro Martínez for a second goal. Tuchel made no further tactical adjustments in the closing minutes.
After the match, Tuchel dismissed criticism from pundits, while Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni praised his team's confidence and possession style. England’s FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said the squad gave “everything today” and affirmed confidence in the manager’s contract through the 2028 European Championship. Tuchel indicated he will continue with the national team into the upcoming home European tournament.
