U.S. Mint Starts Production of $1 Coin Featuring Donald Trump for 250th Anniversary

Resumen

The Treasury Department announced that the U.S. Mint has begun manufacturing a commemorative $1 coin with President Donald Trump’s portrait, intended for release later this year as part of the nation’s 250th-birthday celebrations.

The U.S. Mint has started producing a $1 commemorative coin that bears the likeness of President Donald Trump, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday. The coin, slated for a fall release, was approved earlier this year by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump, but the final version differs in several details, including a gold-colored finish rather than solid gold.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent posted on X that the coin is meant “to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism,” adding that it “celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all.”

Trump told Fox Business Network that he was “honored” by the decision and described the coin as “very cute.”

The obverse shows Trump in a suit with the words “LIBERTY” and the dates 1776-2026, while the reverse features the Great Seal’s bald eagle with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the Latin motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” The design also omits earlier elements such as Trump’s fists resting on a desk.

Federal law generally bars the depiction of a living president on U.S. currency, though the Treasury Secretary can authorize certain commemorative coins. The Treasury Department has previously announced plans to place Trump’s signature on new paper money, a departure from the traditional practice of using only the treasury secretary’s and treasurer’s signatures.
