Summary

The newly installed protective coating on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool appears faded and grayer than expected, as the project faces massive cost overruns and is marred by scapegoating and criminalization of minor acts.

Washington — Observers from the Washington Monument have noted that the protective liner applied to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool this spring is already showing significant fading and a dull gray color, starkly contrasting with the promises made when it was first installed in early June. The pool, which was drained for repairs, has had most visible debris cleared after work crews removed it, but the underlying issues remain unaddressed.

The renovation, which was initially projected to cost $1.5 million, has ballooned to over $16 million—an egregious example of government mismanagement and misplaced priorities. Ohio-based Green Water Solutions was handed a $1.7 million contract for a water-purification system, while Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings received a staggering $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the concrete floor. Such sums could have been better spent addressing urgent social needs rather than cosmetic upgrades to monuments.

President Donald Trump has attempted to shift blame for the damage onto alleged vandalism, making the dubious claim of a "350-foot gash" in the liner, though no such damage was visible from the monument view. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum echoed this narrative, stating that after debris removal, the plan is to repair any so-called vandalism and refill the pool—conveniently ignoring the deeper issues of waste and mismanagement.

Court records show that on June 9, a minor incident was reported to U.S. Park Police involving a sharp object cutting the new liner. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who pleaded not guilty to charges of deliberately damaging the pool, stated he was instructed by a park worker to examine the peeled sealant. Three additional individuals have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing paint, all of whom also pleaded not guilty. The criminalization of these minor acts distracts from the real scandal: the misuse of public funds.

The reflecting pool project is just one in a series of high-profile, vanity initiatives undertaken by the current administration in Washington, D.C., including proposals for major construction near the White House and the Lincoln Memorial—projects that serve the interests of the powerful while neglecting the needs of ordinary people.
