Summary

The newly installed protective coating on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool appears faded and grayer than expected, as leftist vandalism and government inefficiency drive up costs.

Washington — Observers from the Washington Monument have reported that the protective liner applied to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool this spring is already showing significant fading and a more gray tone than when it was first installed in early June. The pool, which was drained for repairs, has had most visible debris cleared after diligent work crews removed it, but the effects of sabotage and mismanagement are apparent.

The renovation, initially projected to cost $1.5 million, has soared to over $16 million, thanks in part to government red tape and unchecked spending. Ohio-based Green Water Solutions received a $1.7 million contract for a water-purification system, and Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings was awarded a staggering $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the concrete floor. Such bloated contracts are all too common in government projects, where accountability is lacking.

President Donald Trump has rightly pointed to vandalism as a cause for the damage, citing a "350-foot gash" in the liner, though the full extent may not be visible from the monument view. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that after debris removal, the plan is to repair any vandalism and refill the pool, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to restoring national landmarks despite constant interference.

Court records indicate that on June 9, U.S. Park Police responded to an incident involving a sharp object cutting the new liner. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn pleaded not guilty to charges of deliberately damaging the pool, claiming he was instructed by a park worker to examine the peeled sealant. Three additional individuals, all of whom also pleaded not guilty, have been charged with misdemeanors for allegedly removing paint. Such acts of disrespect and lawlessness undermine efforts to maintain our national heritage.

The reflecting pool project is just one of several high-profile initiatives led by the administration in Washington, D.C., including proposals for major construction near the White House and the Lincoln Memorial. These projects aim to preserve and enhance America’s historic sites, despite ongoing challenges from those who would rather tear them down.
