U.S. Mint Begins Production of $1 Coin Featuring President Trump

The Treasury announced that a commemorative $1 coin depicting Donald Trump will be released this fall as part of the nation’s 250th-anniversary program, despite legal questions about featuring a living president.

The U.S. Treasury said Wednesday that the Mint has started manufacturing a commemorative one-dollar coin that depicts President Donald Trump as part of the United States’ 250th-anniversary celebration. The coin, slated for release in the fall, received final design approval earlier this year from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed during Trump’s administration. The version shown on Wednesday differs from the earlier approved design, featuring a gold-colored finish rather than solid gold.

"The coin is intended to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent wrote in a post on X, adding that it "celebrates the strength of American values, and the promise of a nation dedicated to preserving freedom for all."

Federal law generally prohibits living presidents from appearing on U.S. currency, a point that has drawn criticism of the decision. The Treasury secretary, however, has limited authority to authorize special coin issues.

The obverse of the coin shows Trump in a suit and tie, with the word “LIBERTY” across the top edge and the dates 1776-2026 at the bottom, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears in the center. The reverse displays the traditional bald eagle from the Great Seal, surrounded by the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the Latin motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
