E. Jean Carroll Receives $5.6 Million Judgment Payment After Trump Appeals Exhausted

Summary

A federal judge ordered President Donald Trump to pay the damages awarded to writer E. Jean Carroll, and the payment was released after the Supreme Court declined to review the case.

Writer E. Jean Carroll announced that she has received the $5.6 million damages awarded by a jury that found President Donald Trump civilly liable for sexual abuse and defamation. The verdict, issued in 2023, was upheld after the Supreme Court refused to hear the case, and a federal judge ordered Trump to pay the judgment.

"The Eagle has landed," Carroll posted on X.com, referencing the historic moon-landing phrase.

Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said the client was pleased that the payment had been released. Trump’s legal team issued a statement claiming the American people support the president and describing the lawsuit as a "Democrat-funded travesty," but the appeal to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals was denied.

Judge Lewis Kaplan had previously criticized Trump for "stalling this case for years" and ordered the payment following the Supreme Court’s refusal to review the matter. The Department of Justice is reportedly examining the case and a nonprofit that assisted Carroll’s legal costs.

The original lawsuits, filed in 2019 and 2022, resulted in separate verdicts of $83 million and $5 million respectively; with interest, the total judgment exceeds $100 million.
