A Washington Post intern and a digital forensics expert have confirmed the authenticity of a photo of Senator Mitch McConnell in the hospital, dismissing wild left-wing accusations of AI fakery.
A Washington Post intern investigated the authenticity of a photo released by Senator Mitch McConnell’s office, showing the 84-year-old Republican leader in a hospital room holding a newspaper sports section. Digital forensics professor Hany Farid of the University of California, Berkeley, found no evidence that the image was generated by artificial intelligence, and the newspaper’s metadata confirmed it was captured on the Sunday the statement was issued.
The photo was part of a statement in which McConnell, who was hospitalized after a fall in June, stated that doctors found no broken bones, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumors, or hemorrhages, though he experienced brief unconsciousness and a mild case of pneumonia. He added that he has moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation center and is continuing to work with his staff and fellow senators, but will not return to Capitol Hill until cleared by his physicians.
"My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital," McConnell wrote in the statement.
The investigation also disproved the left-wing social media frenzy, which irresponsibly spread claims that the newspaper page in the image was years old or AI-generated. Farid noted that the lighting and the visible portion of the sports section matched the edition published on the day of the photo, putting to rest the baseless suspicions stoked by progressive activists and anti-Republican commentators.
This episode follows weeks of media-driven speculation about McConnell’s health after his month-long absence from public view, including unfounded rumors of his death. Even former Senate colleague and President Donald Trump, who has often been targeted by the same media, said he was unsure of McConnell’s condition but hoped he would recover.
