One dead, three missing after boat capsizes near Alcatraz Island
A 50-foot vessel carrying about 20 adults sank in San Francisco Bay near Alcatraz, killing one person and leaving three still missing.
A boat carrying roughly 20 adults capsized about 600 yards from Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday, resulting in one death and three people still unaccounted for. The incident was reported around 3:30 p.m., prompting a response from the San Francisco Fire Department, the U.S. Coast Guard and local marine units.
Fire Chief Dean Crispen said a police marine unit arrived first and rescued a man in severe distress, but he was later pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility. Thirteen passengers were brought safely ashore, while three others were hospitalized with injuries described as impacts from jumping into the water. The three missing individuals remain the focus of an ongoing search involving 11 vessels.
"The information we have is that it left from St. Francis Yacht Club, and the initial report was a vessel on fire. Upon arrival, our members did not evidence any fire. The reports we've had from witnesses is that there were rough seas and the vessel began to take on water and was turned over in the bay," Crispen said.
Search efforts are being coordinated eastward as tides shift, and officials have established a family reunification center at Fort Mason. The boat, identified by the Coast Guard as a 50-foot vessel, was reportedly being used for a memorial service.
"I want to make sure that every family member out there and everybody knows that we are in an active search. This is an all-hands-on-deck search and, hopefully, rescue," said a spokesperson for the search operation.
