One dead, two missing after pleasure boat capsizes near Alcatraz

Summary

A pleasure boat carrying 19 people capsized in San Francisco Bay, killing one passenger and leaving two still missing as rescue crews continue the search.

A pleasure boat carrying 19 passengers capsized in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in one fatality and two people still unaccounted for, fire officials said. Sixteen survivors were rescued, three of whom required hospitalization for injuries sustained when the vessel hit the water. A dog aboard the pontoon also died.

Fire officials initially responded to a reported boat fire at about 3:30 p.m., but found no evidence of fire when they arrived and instead discovered the sinking vessel about 600 yards from Alcatraz Island. The boat later sank to a depth of roughly 120 feet.

"We are going to continue for hours to make sure we find these two missing people, if possible," San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen told reporters.

Rescue operations involved 11 fire department boats, helicopters and scuba divers. One severely injured passenger received cardiopulmonary resuscitation on shore but later died. The three survivors described the incident as chaotic, with some passengers on the boat, some in the water and others falling in as the vessel became submerged.

Mayor Daniel Lurie said the effort was an "all-hands-on-deck" search and rescue operation. Officials said the investigation into the cause of the capsizing is ongoing.
