E. Jean Carroll receives $5.6 million judgment payment from Trump

Summary

A New York jury's $5 million verdict, plus interest, was paid to writer E. Jean Carroll after the Supreme Court allowed the civil judgment against President Donald Trump to stand.

Writer E. Jean Carroll has been paid more than $5.6 million that a New York jury awarded her in a sexual-abuse and defamation lawsuit against President Donald Trump, court records show. The payment, which includes the $5 million verdict and accrued interest, was transferred from an escrow account on Monday following a Supreme Court decision that let the civil judgment stand.

Roberta Kaplan, Carroll’s attorney, confirmed the disbursement, saying, "We are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment." Carroll noted the receipt in a post on Substack.

Trump’s legal team has indicated it will continue to pursue appeals. Earlier, the former president’s lawyers sought an emergency order to block the payment, but a judge denied the request without imposing conditions on how Carroll may use the funds. Carroll’s counsel indicated she intends to place the money in a retirement account.

The jury found that Trump assaulted Carroll in a department-store dressing room in 1996 and later defamed her after she publicly recounted the incident in a 2019 memoir. Trump has denied the allegations, asserting that no sexual encounter occurred and characterizing Carroll’s claims as false.

The case proceeded after New York amended its laws to allow survivors of historic sexual abuse to file new lawsuits. In a separate defamation trial, a Manhattan jury awarded Carroll $83 million, a judgment that Trump is also appealing.
