LeBron James Nears Decision on Free-Agency Destination

Summary

NBA free agent LeBron James is close to choosing his next team, with several franchises, including Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, Philadelphia, Minnesota and Denver, reported as leading suitors.

NBA reporter Shams Charania told "NBA Today" that LeBron James, a free-agent forward, is approaching a decision on his next team. Charania said the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves are among the "leading suitors" and added that the Denver Nuggets are also being considered.

"It’s decision time for LeBron James, because all of the information, for the most part, is in," Charania said, noting that general managers, presidents, owners and the player’s agent Rich Paul have been in contact, and that other players have reached out to recruit him.

Charania said James’ choice is expected to be driven by competitive rather than financial considerations.

"LeBron James has made it clear privately that he wants to go somewhere where he can compete for a championship, where he feels happiness from a team environment and culture that he can uplift," he added.

NBA on Prime host Chris Haynes confirmed the report, stating he had spoken with Rich Paul, who indicated that James now has all the necessary information and must make his own decision. Rival teams reportedly view the Cavaliers, the franchise that drafted James in 2003, as the front-runner to sign him.
