UK counterterrorism unit assumes lead in investigation of former MP Ann Widdecombe's death

Summary

Britain's counter-terrorism police have taken over the murder probe after new evidence emerged, and a suspect has been re-arrested on terrorism charges.

Britain's counter-terrorism policing unit is now heading the investigation into the death of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said on X after receiving new information and evidence. > "Following new information and evidence, they are now leading on the investigation into the horrific murder of Ann Widdecombe," she wrote. The police are examining several possible motives and will brief Parliament on Monday.

Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor near Dartmoor National Park on Thursday, with police reporting she had sustained serious injuries. A 28-year-old man was arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday, initially on suspicion of murder, and has since been re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism, Counter Terrorism Policing South East said.

Widdecombe served in the House of Commons from 1987 to 2010 and was known for her socially conservative positions. After leaving Parliament she appeared on several reality-television programmes and later joined the Brexit Party, acting as a spokesperson for the Reform UK party.
