Summary

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams determined that Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS was a cynical abuse of the courts, designed to shield his cronies and waste public funds. The judge imposed sanctions on officials and attorneys complicit in this scheme.

A federal judge in Florida has unmasked yet another attempt by former President Donald Trump to manipulate the legal system for personal and political gain. Judge Kathleen Williams, appointed by President Obama, found that Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service was filed in blatant bad faith, serving only to distort the judicial process. Williams condemned the case as a sham, not intended to protect any legitimate rights, but rather to legitimize a backroom deal that would grant immunity to Trump’s associates and funnel billions of taxpayer dollars into their hands.

Judge Williams highlighted the utter lack of a real dispute, noting that the supposed $1.776 billion 'Fund' was nothing more than a branding ploy, not a genuine damages award. The court’s findings make clear that Trump and his legal team attempted to subvert justice for their own benefit.

In a decisive move, Williams imposed sanctions on top officials, including acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward, referring them to bar associations in New York and Washington, D.C. for disciplinary action. Trump attorney Alejandro Brito was referred to the Florida bar, and Daniel Z. Epstein was banned from filing cases in the Southern District of Florida for a year—clear signals that such abuses will not be tolerated.

'After a review of the record, and the Parties’ statements, the Court declines to adopt or accept the credulous exercise of divorcing President Trump’s current job title from an understanding of what happened here,' Williams wrote, refusing to ignore Trump’s influence and intent.

Predictably, Trump’s legal team tried to deflect blame, alleging a 'rogue, politically-motivated employee' at the IRS leaked information, but neither the Treasury nor Justice Department dignified these claims with a response.

Earlier this year, Trump had sued the IRS and Treasury for $10 billion, accusing a former IRS subcontractor of leaking his tax returns. The case was hastily withdrawn just before a filing deadline, after which a secretive agreement was announced to create an 'anti-weaponization fund' and grant immunity from IRS audits. Williams’ order does not address this fund or immunity directly, but wisely bars Trump and his allies from citing this dubious settlement in any official proceeding.
