Misidentified pool photo debunked as evidence in Nolan Wells case
A photo of Mississippi football player Nolan Wells at a June 27 pool party was mistakenly shared online as proof he was alive after his disappearance, but investigators confirmed the image predates the incident.
A photo of 18-year-old Nolan Wells taken at a pool party on June 27 was circulated on social media on July 5, leading some users to claim it proved he survived a July 4 disappearance on Horn Island. Metadata and statements from Wells' close friend Tracestin Shepherd verified the picture was captured nearly a week before the incident. Shepherd said the image was posted as part of a group’s photo dump and later removed when rumors about Wells’ death spread.
Shepherd described the spread of the mis-dated photo as “unbelievable” and “heartbreaking,” adding that false narratives have complicated the grieving process for his friends and family. The pool-party image is the latest in a series of misleading visuals linked to the case, which has also involved misinterpreted videos and AI-generated content.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office officials emphasized the need for original, unedited material in the ongoing investigation, stating that investigators are relying on eyewitness accounts and physical evidence. Wells’ mother, Christine Wonsley, has publicly refuted fabricated content and urged the public to respect her family’s privacy while requesting any relevant information be directed to local authorities and her legal team.
