One person killed in Biddeford shooting involving ICE agents
A fatal shooting occurred Monday morning in Biddeford, Maine, after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents opened fire, prompting investigations by state and federal authorities.
A man was shot dead just before 7:18 a.m. on Monday in Biddeford, Maine, after a confrontation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, police said. Biddeford police confirmed ICE involvement and limited their role to securing the scene. State officials, including Governor Janet Mills, said they have been briefed and that Maine State Police are cooperating with the Attorney General’s Office, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and federal investigators to determine the facts.
Witnesses near the intersection of Pool and Hill streets reported hearing gunfire and seeing agents in green vests attempting to stop a vehicle. One resident described the victim exiting the car with a head wound and bleeding heavily. The vehicle later sustained multiple bullet holes in its windshield after being struck by a police SUV.
Local officials and community leaders expressed shock and called for transparency. The director of Heart of Biddeford said the organization is "deeply saddened" and expects a full explanation. Governor Mills issued a statement that she had been briefed and that authorities are working cooperatively.
The incident adds to a series of fatal shootings involving ICE agents reported nationwide over the past 18 months. Federal, state and local agencies have not released further details, and several media outlets are awaiting a briefing.
Protests were organized near the scene, and some residents reported increased ICE activity in the area in recent weeks. The Biddeford Police Department said it will not provide additional updates as the investigation continues.
