UK counter-terrorism police take lead in investigation of former MP Ann Widdecombe's death

Summary

British counter-terrorism units are now heading the probe into the suspected murder of former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe after new evidence emerged, while a 28-year-old suspect has been re-arrested on terrorism-related charges.

British counter-terrorism police have assumed responsibility for the investigation into the suspected murder of former MP Ann Widdecombe, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said on Monday, citing new information and evidence. Earlier statements indicated no link to terrorism or political motives, but authorities are now pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to determine the attack's motivation.

Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday, with police believing she died the day before her body was discovered. She had sustained serious injuries, according to a police statement released last week.

A 28-year-old white British man was arrested in South Yorkshire on Saturday on suspicion of murder. Counter-terrorism units from the North East and South Yorkshire Police carried out the arrest on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police. On Monday, the same suspect was re-arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism following the emergence of additional evidence.

Widdecombe had a long political career, serving as a Conservative MP, government minister and later as a member of the European Parliament for the Brexit Party. She was also a regular television commentator. Politicians across parties expressed condolences; Prime Minister Keir Starmer described her death as a significant loss and urged unity beyond political differences.
