Police in southwest England announced on Saturday that a 28-year-old white British man was arrested in South Yorkshire on suspicion of murdering former Conservative minister Ann Widdecombe. The Devon and Cornwall Constabulary said the suspect is now in custody and that the arrest was carried out with assistance from Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire police.
Widdecombe, 78, was discovered with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday and is believed to have been dead for up to 24 hours before her body was found. Authorities have stated there is no indication the case is terrorism-related and said further updates will be provided the following day.
"The suspect, who is a white British national, is now in police custody," the police statement read.
Widdecombe, a former minister and former MEP who later served as a spokesperson for Reform UK, had previously been noted for her role in the Brexit campaign.
