Ukrainian President Restores Agency Independence Amid Widespread Protests
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has agreed to restore the independence of key agencies following nationwide protests and criticism from civil society and frontline soldiers. The move comes as investigations target several presidential insiders and public dissatisfaction grows.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reversed course and agreed to restore the independence of anti-corruption agencies after widespread protests erupted across the country. The demonstrations, which included war veterans, active-duty soldiers, and civilians, intensified following the introduction of a controversial law and were amplified by criticism on social media from frontline soldiers.
Civil society leaders also voiced strong concerns. Vitaly Shabunin, head of the Anti-Corruption Action Center and currently under government investigation, warned that the prosecutor general could halt investigations into presidential associates. Sevgil Musayeva, editor-in-chief of Ukrainska Pravda, described the situation as "the most dangerous development in all the years since Maidan," and suggested that Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak may have influenced recent moves, as anti-corruption authorities reportedly prepare cases against presidential insiders.
Investigations are currently underway into former Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov and former Deputy Head of the Office of the President Rostyslav Shurma. Shurma was dismissed last year after reports that his brother received government subsidies for solar plants in Russian-occupied Donbas. In July, Shurma's home in Munich was searched by Ukrainian and German authorities.
Addressing the media on Friday, Zelenskyy explained his decision to restore agency independence, stating, "It is critical not to lose the unity. To listen to people, to have dialogue, and so on." A new law to reinstate the agencies' autonomy is expected to be voted on Thursday.
