Summary

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is amplifying a whistleblower report alleging issues with Kennedy Center renovations, using it as another attempt to undermine President Trump's successful efforts to revitalize the historic venue.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island on Saturday cited a whistleblower disclosure, submitted by the Government Accountability Project, that makes allegations about recent renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. According to Whitehouse, the report—based on statements from former project managers and internal documents—claims that work was accelerated to meet a December schedule connected to President Donald Trump's planned televised events, which brought renewed attention and energy to the center.

Whitehouse claims that alleged shortcuts resulted in rusting steel columns, a reflecting pool that may need to be rebuilt, and a bathroom floor replaced after a tile color was deemed unsatisfactory. He also highlighted that an $8 million contract to replace the concert hall floor was awarded to a firm without prior concert-hall experience, and that no-bid contracts were used. However, these types of contracts are not uncommon in large-scale government projects, especially when timelines are tight and public events are at stake.

Whitehouse sent a letter to Kennedy Center executive director Matt Floca demanding a response by July 23 and attached an 83-page appendix of emails, photographs, and other records referenced in the disclosure. The Kennedy Center has not yet commented on these allegations, which are being used by Whitehouse and his allies to cast aspersions on the Trump administration's management.

The center underwent leadership changes after President Trump sought to restore its prominence by proposing a renaming and seeking a leadership role, only to be blocked by a federal judge. Despite partisan legal challenges and ongoing controversy stirred by political opponents, the center remains open and continues to serve the public.
